Re: [ATM] Split ring bearing surface

polished stainless over it in order to produce a smooth surface. >>
There have been a number of mountings made this way. The best results
will be if the split ring is made of stable material, like birch
plywood. Solid wood will expand across the grain enough to create
problems down the line.
I saw a different idea several years ago. Sections of steel were placed
edge on into the split ring (and welded) rather than flat against it.
A trammel point was afixed to a grinder, and the edge was ground round
(the same way you cut circles with a router), concentric with the split
ring. The 1/4 inch wide steel rode on cam followers. The owner
reported that there was almost zero tracking error from horizon to
horizon with the arrangement.
