[ATM] trepanning
Been following this thread with some interest.Cutting a piece of flat
glass at a 45 degree angle is a cute trick. The drill press is 1 way to do
it.I remember doing some blanks for Nate up the road from me.I still have
the cutter I made for the job.I believe I used #220 sil/carbide.The idea of
sandwiching some glass over the part to be done is a neat idea.My
compliments to the gentleman that came up with it.Since I have not done
this before,I have a few observations.I imagine guiding must be a real
problem. To steady the cutter,an arm of some kind could keep the tool from
deflecting away from the cut.The alternative is to do a 'dwell-cut' upon
first contact.Let the slow-moving edge make its own slot before
continuing.I would make a steady for the drill only because I'm an obsessed
machinist.Chipping on the back results from break-out at the finish. To
center your work, just make up a wooden plug with a hole in the middle that
is the size of your diagonal. Cut this on a saw at a 45 degree angle.Put
the wood centering jig in the drill press holding it by a short rod that
snuggly fits the hole. That should center the work you position
underneath. As I read about "Adventures of the Intrepid Optician",I realize
how close we are in our respective trades. We are both looking for the
finished gem.I'd really like to push some glass,if I only had the space to
do it.
regards,Ron
