Closeness of the fringes depends on the wedge of air
between the glasses.

The lines should spread apart or come closer together
depending on what you are doing to the wedge of air
between the glasses. The fact that the lines "warp and
bend" tells me the glass is changing shape due to the
pressure you are putting on the glass. If you are
seeing this amount of surface change, you should hope
that your mounting method places a LOT LESS pressure
on the glass or you will be unhappy with the finished
product.
