Thank you all for the info on Al. I suspect my piece may be the T6061 as it is easy to cut and file, and also drills and taps pretty well. $1 - 1.50/lb sounds like a good price. When you get it from a scrap yard do you have any choice about shape/size or do they just weigh out whatever?
