[ATM] Re: Types of Aluminum
As has been said, there are many types of aluminum. For most project
for the ATM, 6061 is probably the best choice. If you picked the sheet
of aluminum up from a fabrication shop it may be a 1000 series alloy.
Mainly pure aluminum that is easy to bend and weld to but a real pain to
drill and machine. It is extremely gummy when drilling or milling and
tears chunks out while doing so. It is mainly procesed by shearing or
punching.

As to the remarks on steel pricing, I have noticed it as well. When
pricing some stainless steel bar stock, I was informed there is a 10%
surcharge on it, to cover the rising cost of nickel and chrome in it.
It has gotten worse since then and I have been told that there are
surcharges being applied to mild steel now as well. Hopefully the
pricing on aluminum will not get as bad.
