I've consistently used T6061, which is a good workable
aluminum alloy. It can be drilled and tapped easily,
machined, and hand-filed to just about any shape you
want. Also, it's pretty inexpensive but the per pound
cost I don't know off hand. I've made finder
telescope
mounting brackets with this stuff, as well as an
adapter
plate for my Byers drive to attach to my equatorial
mount. My brother-in-law machined some nice aluminum
end rings for my telescope tube with this material.
