Aluminum tubing is often used for the various parts of a scope.  Try to use
the stuff that isn't extruded as it will tend to hold its shape better.
Anything that says 6061 is generally the best stuff.
For joining, you may want to farm that work out to somebody that has a MIG
welder as those little machines do wonderful work welding aluminum together.
