Re: [ATM] Hand held testing & Nixon's comming

You have to remember that it takes less than an hour of work to get a mirror
ground out and polished in a factory setting. The rest of the time is
getting that parabola on the surface. One guy doing the grinding on the
necessary 3 grinding steps can supply several polishers and figurers. The
rough polishing can best be done on paper or felt laps that will bring up a
polish rapidly although that polish may not be a good surface for optical
work. Final polishing with pitch and then figuring usually won't take long
once you become familiar with the stokes on the spindle that are needed.
For us amateurs, the process, of course, takes a lot longer mostly because
we don't have the machines that will do the work in short order.
Now that you have a surface that is near correct, you can now make it smooth
with the full sized lap. Don't forget to put your hands one in front of the
other rather than the more natural feeling side by side position and TDE
will tend to happen a lot less.
