[ATM] Types of aluminum

Hello,

Don't recall if it was here or elsewhere, but I was reading about various species of Al. Is there an easy way to tell the relevant (to ATM) characteristics without actually cutting and drilling, etc? For instance, I picked up an odd piece of 1'x4'x1/4" sheet at a local shop. It worked out fine, and I gather that $40 was a fair price, but if it had been brittle, or really tough to cut that wouldn't have been so good.
