Re: [ATM] History of moving mirrors for Schmidt Cassegrains.

Cassigrain moving mirror focusers are more demanding. The SCT or MCT
typically has four times or higher magnification. Any play or tilt due to
the moving mirror focuser will be magnified at the image plane.
I built and tested several types of moving mirror cassigrain focusers
(sliding arbor tube, three lead screw, multiple ground rod with linear
bearings) before inventing my compliant moving mirror focuser. My patented
moving mirror focuser works very well..no image shift, no mirror flop, no
need for lubrication, and has no stiction. IMO, the moving mirror focuser
is not a good choice for a cassigrain. There is an optimal spacing for
minimal aberrations with a MCT or SCT and moving the mirror deviates from
this optimal spacing. The same design used for my moving mirror focuser
also works well as a non-moving mirror focuser and has the advantage of
using very little back focus (very low profile of 25mm) with long travel.
