Try calling a few commercial building supply outlets in your area and
ask for Hydrocal, Ultracal, Hydro-stone or gypsum cements. I haven't
checked lately but I don't think the Home Depot type places don't carry
it and if they do it's probably more expensive there. From the
commercial supply you're probably looking at a 50lb bag minimum but the
stuff is fairly cheap. I think when I was checking a while back I could
get 50# from building supply for the same cost that hobby shops were
selling 25#.
Within each of these there are product differences in expansion and
final strength and hardness, setup time etc. You want something of high
compression strength when fully cured. You can find product
specifications on these by searching the net. All of these products
have been used with success as tile tools.
