Dan, basically, viewing the sun directly will damage the eyeball in the
central area of the eyeball. Going and multiplying that power level by the
size of the objective only makes things worse. The bare eyeball will
generally reduce itself to less than 1mm in diameter when looking at
something so bright. Now take (for a 6" scope) 150mm squared which is about
22500 times the power density of the light and that is a lot of light
focused into your eyeball!
