Re: [ATM] Edging a Blank

Mike,

I suspect that the setup in your picture is working so slow because you
are not getting
enough working pressure on the tiles against the glass. Essentially you are
hogging glass
right? Just be sure that the jig doesn't pinch the glass, and get more of
those tiles in contact.

Addressing some other comments, bear in mind I only SAW the jig, but the
inverted brake
shoe analogy might address the "out of round" condition as the tiles would
not be floating.
I'm not sure what you mean by roughness, but would guess it is something
other than the pits
from working at 220 grit. Somebody mentioned using a screw tensioning
device rather than
springs, which might be a good idea if you have severe out of round. If it
were me, I would
CAREFULLY route a 16 inch circle, and then cast a dental stone jig around
that with a 1/2 inch
gap between the two sections. With a little ingenuity, you could maintain
the bevel by
introducing a sharpening stone at one of the gaps ,and apply slurry through
the other one.

If you want to give credit, this jig was in the workshop of a humble
Master Optician
whose passion (besides his wife) was to observe the stars. A very
unassuming man
who very rarely deviated from shorts, white T shirt and sandals. (my wife
remarked that
he looked like Jerry Garcia). Surely an honor and privilege to know Bob
Goff.

Perhaps it is the pursuit of observing the heavens that instills in us
this unassuming air?
There are many on this list that I have had the pleasure of either writing
to or chatting with in
person and this apparently is a common trait.

Good idea! I may modify my setup to be more like that. Currently I have
the
tiles only on one side, held in place by a strip of aluminum flashing which

is held against the side by a hinged arm held by bungie cords. Here's a
picture.
