Growing ATM'ers and Observers
The Central Florida Astronomical Society is pleased to announce the
formation of the first ATM Group. This first group is 14 members
strong, the number was limited due to space at my house where the work
will take place. ATM'ing just grows and grows, and the group is very
enthused about building their scopes. I also look at it as Astronomical
Evangelism, like growing our own observers. I think that is an often
overlooked aspect, and we will undertake the effort to further educate
the "newbies" after their scopes are finished and pairing them with
experienced observers.
This whole group was made possible by Dan Cassaro's efforts to create
affordable kits to his fellow astronomers. Although C.F.A.S. makes no
endorsement of any product, we are confident that his products should
make fine scopes given care in fabrication and assembly. Infact we
ordered so much glass that we are his largest single order to date. We
do anticipate posting pictures and builders diary's on the C.F.A.S.
website at http://www.cfas.org as soon as possible. We will also
publish additional photos and details regarding the 24" Mirror Grinder
we will be using along with traditional barrels (pictures of the Grinder
can be found in our Club Scrapbook section). In the pictures, I'm
giving a presentation on Mirror Grinding. They were taken just a few
months before I had two heart attacks, not related to Grinding;-)
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mel Bartels and
many others, for being pioneers in thin mirror fabrication. Without the
sharing of experiences from all the ATM list members, this hobby would
not have advanced like it has. I am sure that at sometime, the Group
will be up here asking questions. I know that they will find the same
level of quality advise and moral support that has been a hallmark of
this list.
