I applied for a job at one of the pros making adaptive optics for the big
scopes about 5 years ago (didn't get the job, <sigh>) and they had already
given up on the idea of using a general purpose computer to calculate the
corrections and had gone to gate arrays (Xilinx in their case) to do the
calculations fast enough.  Speed is all important when doing this stuff and
a laptop just can't do things fast enough.
