Don't worry yet.  Polish a bit slower and try to keep the forces off the
edge of the mirror.  It's always a desire to see what is going on while
you're starting the polish but oftentimes it only brings on a ulcer if you
tend to make them which is totally unneeded as the figure goes through all
kinds of strange permutations.
If you are afraid of your hands making the edges thick and thus turned down,
I suggest that you glue a set of wood handles to the back of the mirror and
do your work with them.  You can also make a disk the diameter of the mirror
and tape it to the glass, possibly gluing the center for insurance.  Make
sure that you set your mirror support up so that you don't have to take off
the handles or you will have problems putting them on and taking them off.
