ATM 3/4" plywood for dob.?
I like to use 3/4" Appleply also, but I always route away virtually all
non-structural material. I prefer 3/4-inch ply where I will be gluing up
edges or using threaded inserts for 1/4-inch diameter fasteners (the
threaded inserts have enough board thickness to bite into). In the 6 to
10-inch telescopes I build on occasion, I have not found weight to be an
issue since I lighten them so much with the router--recent 10-inch and
8-inch dobs both weighed around 40 lbs. total each and could easily be
carried in one piece, including observing stool and eyepiece case if I hung
them around my shoulders with a strap enabling me to make a single trip
outside:

I would NEVER use 3/4-inch plywood if I didn't remove all excess
material--too heavy if you slap together a 4x8' sheet or two into all the
pieces of a typical medium to large sized dob.
