Re: ATM Polishing pads (was Any recent big BVC mirrors?)
I get the pads from a wholesaler that happens to be near my house and they
cost about $20 for 3000 pads. You want to get the thin glass rectangular
petals. They have pads in various different shapes and thicknesses and I
haven't seen any difference between the action of the thick and thin pads
and the thin are a bit cheaper (a few cents). There are also the entire
line of glass pads also in the plastic lens versions and you don't want
those as they are more intended for working with the softer plastic so they
won't work as fast.
For most, the roll of pads are a lifetime supply but for those like me that
are running a mirrormaking class, I'll use them up in about a year or so fo
class.
If you're lucky, you might get them to provide you with about 10 pads for a
sample if you talk to them nicely as the wholesalers often don't want to
deal with a small sale like that. You might also find out who's using the
pads and get some from them as an "experiment". Needless to say, this is a
job of begging and interesting the other person rather than demanding
things.
