A job that I worked at had a microscope that produced fringes and I think that this may be the same sort of thing. We used it to measure the heads on a rotating head tape recorder (a 40x normal rate VCR) for height and rotation. Whatever it is, sounds like an interesting item to have as a toy. You might want to get some info from the manufacturer of the instrument.
