ATM - More Grinding Machine ideas

Hi Again,

In my previous post, I left out a design idea I'm
considering for my mirror grinding machine. I've seen
an old "Gleaning For ATM's" article concerning the use
of homemade pulleys for a belt-reduction system.
These were hardwood blanks turned on a wood lathe
against a v-belt shaped cutter. The scheme looked
good in the photo, but was not nearly the diameter I'm
thinking about.

I'm proposing to make some large (12-18" dia) pulleys
to achieve large reduction ratios in my machine. A
large disk of plywood rotated in a jig against a
router bit or table saw blade to cut the necessary
groove is what I'm envisioning.

Has anyone here tried making anything like these? Big
pulleys are expensive (and I have found none at all
for sale in this size range). I'm a little worried
about wear on the belts from the wooden surface, does
anyone have suggestions for a finish?

Thanks in advance for your input, I've learned from
several years of constant lurking and sporadic input
that this group is frequented by a long list of people
whose advice is a resource I really cherish. I have
never before been involved with such a great crowd.
