Derek,  I worked on a project several years ago where a lot of brass
work was restored.  I was surprised to find that the restorers used tung
oil to protect the refinished brass.  They thinned it out and put it on
with cotton balls and cotton swabs.  It will enhanse the coloring of the
brass, and can easily be removed when it begins to wear.  The restorers
suggested that the pieces be recoated every 2-3 years, and thoroughly
cleaned every 10-12 years.
