ATM Brasswork

The new telescope that I am working on just now has quite a bit 
of brasswork on it.  Can anyone on the list advise me as to how 
the brass can be treated to resist tarnishing.

I have tried cellulose based clear lacquer in a spray can from the local 
motor store but don't find this to be very satisfactory as it is difficult 
to get an even coat and it does'nt seem to last.  Perhaps the technique is 
wrong. Any ideas appreciated.
