Nope, the turned edge is real and not some kind of artifact.  A look at some
good mirrors shows that they have a good shape all the way to the edge of
the glass.  I've seen a lot of turned down edge and also some turned up
edges with some of the work done at the mirrormaking group and none of them
have ended up looking like an effect.
