Ah, maybe not a good idea - according to my dentist of all
people. I never knew this, but apparently a lot of different toothpastes
are actually surpizingly gritty, even the ones you buy for your kids. But
apparently the worst offenders of all are all the new "whitening" toothpastes.
In order to get your teeth that 'super white", many of these
toothpastes are very abrasive, and really can do a number on yoru tooth
enamel.
I am not sure exactly what the actual designation would be in
terms of a number, but from what I understand, some of these toothpastes
would actually be closer to a very fine grit than a polish. For example -
and this is just for sake of argument - your average whitening toothpaste
might be closser to say an 800 grit, or the point I am trying to make, even
coarser than your #1200 grit listed above.
You know, as a weird and crazy experiment at a starparty this
summer, it might be fun to have a workshop setup wherein different brands
of toothpastes are tested against glass to measure thier grit rating and
suitability for grinding. Who knows, we just might find a replacement for
#500 grit at the local drug store!

PS - try Pearl Drops Tooth Polish if you are in the mood. It comes already
semi-liquid and is reputed to be one of the most gritty of all.
