Re: ATM Hardwood vs. Softwoods
I don't know much about American woods to give specific advice however
in choosing a wood for a mount I would consider more it's properties in
that order : (1) minimum movement with changing humidity (2) good
working ability, glue & paint holding ability (3) no tendency to split
or crack (4) relative strenth (5) cost.
In Australia we have many exellent timbers to choose from but if you
look for timber suitable for boats you will find the right one. I would
stay away from most "hardwoods" mostly because thy fail in # (1) If you
go for ply & cost doesn't matter use Cabun or Mahogony or for
maintantance free (just oil it) us Teak. I build solid furniture as a
hobby & use mostly disgarded grate timber which cost nothing.
