Re: ATM Formica Method -- clamping discs
Thanks for the feedback James.
For round edges I have used a clamp based on the automotive oil-filter
wrench. Get a band of strapping spring steel like they use for strapping
large cartons, or nicer stuff if you have it around. Cut it about four
inches longer than the diameter you need to compress. Wrap it around your
disk and bend the ends up to 90 degrees, like tabs, so there is about an
inch clearance between them. Drill two holes in one tab (mark it deeply with
a small punch to give the bit some grab) an inch apart, and one hole in the
other. Take a two-foot piece of 1x1 molding or piece of broomstick
(something for a handle) and bolt it to the outside of the tab with two
holes in it using 1/4-inch stove bolts. Make the outboard hole in the stick
way oversize to allow for wobble, and the bolt, with a washer beneath the
head, long enough to pass through the stick and into the single hole on the
other tab.
Clamp the work piece down to your bench, sawhorse, whatever your work
surface is. When you use this clamp, pad the inner circumference with a
strip of formica that matches your disk size to keep from indenting your
work piece. Apply pressure on the stick until the band is tight enough to
squeeze extra cement out from under the edges of the laminate and fasten the
handle at that position, to your work bench, sawhorse, whatever is
supporting the work. Duct tape, nylon cord, anything will work for this.
Don't lose it, in case you ever need to change any really BIG oil filters.
