Hello Dan

You may have already seen my GEG report owing to Bobby's kind reference.  I
should add that I wrote the GEG report specifically to address the sort of
queries you raise. If you have not seen it please find it at: 
http://www.astrocruise.com/geg.htm

It is quite a lot of reading, because it tries to address just about every 
facet of the GEG.  However if you have 10 minutes to spare I think you will 
find it worthwhile.  In view of your queries I would draw your attention 
specifically to the Mode Report section.  Also please look at the Options 
section where I think you will find more useful info.
