You can use it for that, but more magnification would be better & more
precise. 
We're really talking about 2 steps here: 1) framing the object correctly 
and 2) getting exact focus. 
I use my Nikon F with the 8X loupe to get the object centered in the
viewfinder.
I then use an eyepiece to reach critical focus.

No. The om-1 line does not have removable viewfinders.

If you are staying with the OM-1 you might be a step ahead by 
getting the astrofocuser. Price is steep but it might be worth it after
a few sleepless nights with bad pics.
