FYI,

Tony now has some minimal technical info with his amazing photos at:

Interestingly, his M42 photo, which Spaceboy speculated was un-sharp masked
 with a digital version of Malin's optical method (which Malin did not
invent, by the way), turns out, was not enhanced in this way at all.

It was a composite of six exposures, some of varying exposure length, put
together in Picture Window and Photoshop.
