Well, I intended to pose a question, but it doesn't read that way. 
Nevertheless, I got my answer from Minolta.  So, for posterity's sake:

There's a combination of switches that turn on/off the sensor for the
presence or absence of the Auto-Focus Lens.  When "on" the camera
won't allow inadvertent shutter releases in the absence of the A/F Lens. 
When "off" I can shoot the moon thru my LX-50 to my heart's content.
