I have argued that point in the past. I do not see burning and dodging
as manipulation. For me manipulation is to alter content. Releasing what
is already there by burning or dodging is not changing the content,
simply qualifying it. If you see detail in a cloud, but not on the
image, is it manipulation to bring out that detail? I see burning or
dodging as a creative process to saturate the veiwer with the quality of
the scene we tried to depict. Ansel Adams I understand tried to do the
same.
