Ansel Adams used filters to change the tonal values in his images. See
Moonrise, Hernendez New Mexico.  The sky was not black when he took the
photo since the sun was still up illuminating the graveyard in the
foreground. He got off a frame and then lost that light.  Point is,
although people considered Adams a realist, he manipulated the hell out of
his images, spending hours and hours in the darkroom burning and dodging.

As far as the definition of art... I apply the same definition to art that
Chuang-Tzu applied to the Tao:

"If one asks about the Tao and another answers him, neither of them knows it."
