Instead of removing the rubber eye cups you may want to try this. With 
the meade variable projection tube I just slide the 26mm series 4000  
eyepiece down the tube from the proximal end. Works for me. 

The only problem I have is with higher magnifications I often get 
a reflection in the center of the field. I don't know if this is due to 
the eyecup but will look at it tonight.
