I'm not familiar with photographic terms, but if by "shadow detail" you mean that you 
loose the ability to 
adequately see what's in a shadow in a normal daylight photograph, then slide scanners 
suffer from a similar 
functionality.  For astro negatives, they can have a hard time differentiating between 
the dim parts of the 
object and the sky background if the negative is badly sky fogged.
