Re: [APML] Automatic Background Extractor - ABE

The main difference is that ABE works in a fully automatic way, while DBE is
an interactive process. With ABE you don't have to set background samples
manually; the program does the dirty work, and does it *very well* :)
ABE is a command-line console application because its automatized work line
doesn't benefit too much from a graphical user interface, while DBE is
integrated with PixInsight LE.
Please note that "automatic" here does not mean absence of user
intervention. Although ABE performs quite well with its default set of
parameters in many cases, it in fact has a lot of parameters available for
fine-tuning it (much more than DBE, in fact).
Another important difference is that ABE uses, compared to DBE, a more rigid
modelization system that adapts more accurately to most real-world
vignetting and gradient illumination profiles. DBE uses an extremely
flexible modelization that can fix very complex background profiles, but at
the cost of reduced overall accuracy if the samples are not set with great
care.
ABE is a high-performance, extremely accurate and versatile tool. Carlos
Milovic has made a wonderful work implementing brilliantly a lot of clever
algorithms into this little software jewel.
Having tested ABE thoroughly with lots of targets before releasing it, our
recommendation now is: use ABE and learn how to use and apply its
parameters; use DBE only if ABE fails (it fails rarely, indeed), or for
extremely difficult cases, e.g. when there are very few free sky background
regions on your image.
There are more differences, and lots of things to be said, but better have a
look at ABE's website, especially at the processing examples page:

Have fun!

Juan
