Be sure that this is not an processing artifact, in terms that the processing tolls as a design error generated that (in some way, like a JPEG artifact). I think that is mainly artistic interpretation with of course a minor addition of inexperience and not optimal use of the tools.
I think that I'll speak for some PI users for this: I don't think that PS images look weird, or funny. I just have the feeling that they have been underprocessed (not always, of course), or that the needed toold were not at hand. For example, I don't like to see flat, white (oversaturated) stars. Also I think that in many images a much better vignetting correction could be applied. Others have oversaturated bright objects. And much more frecuently, that a poor noise reduction have been applied (both lost details, or too much grain/noise left, accompanied with some artifacts).
By the other hand, I have seen many great images done just in PS, or using a mix of softwares. I don't believe that the software you use is sich a big factor, if you really know how to use it, it's flaws and pros, and when to use another. The key point about PI, and why I like it so much, is that it has been designed by us, to fullfit our needs. It is in constant evolution, so we have the close opportunity to have a word to say about that, and make things better. And believe me, there comes a time when you need more than what PS has to offer (btw, nobody had said nothing about other great programs, like ImagePlus, IRIS, RegiStar, Registax, StellarVue, MaximDL, and many more like them, wich do give the user more advanced features that PS lacks!).
