It is closer than you think ;-)

PixInsight, for instance, handles 64bit FITS files, although the extra data will be clipped right now, this will not happen in the standard release. Also, every one of my programs reads and writes 64bit FITS, and many of the inner calculations are performed with 64bits variables.
