Ok, I think I'm on the same page now.  I thought that you were
saying that the backlash compensation went twice as far/much time
as set.  Well, actually I guess it does but it does it over two
corrections, not one.

This is not normal at all.  Contact SBIG about this problem.  
They are very helpful.

In the meantime as a quick fix I would just set the DEC to half
the normal setting.  The drift that you would get over the two
exposure/correction cycles should be minimal.
