Hi Chuck,
You can get a 16 or even a 32 bit read out on the eyedropper info tool in
PS CS2.
Click on the eyedropper icon in the info readout box (it has the teeny
tiniest right pointing triangle under it) and right click and you'll get a
pop-up box with options in it where you can set the bit depth of the
readout. You can also get 16 bit readouts on color sample points.
Photoshop's levels and curves are working in 16 bits when you have a 16 bit
image open (ok, it's actually 15 bits, but that's a story for another day).
Just the readout in curves and levels is limited to 256 steps.
Perhaps a work around is to establish color sample points with 16 bit
readouts and then manipulate the data in curves or levels and watch the 16
bit readouts in the info box...
