[APML] OT: external HD questions

I have a question for you IT pros out there. :-)  I picked up a USB external
HD so I could back up my images.  I'm not going to be running a dual boot
system nor am I going to be running any programs etc off it... just plain
storage of files.  I have a few questions with this in mind:

1.)  Does this drive need to be partitioned? I have a limited knowledge of
HD's but I did hear that you can have a HD with no partitions?

2.)  The drive was formatted at the factory as FAT32 yet my main C:\ drive
is NTFS.  With Win XP can I have the external drive be FAT32 without
problems or does it have to be NTFS like the master C:\ drive?
