Hi Charles,
You can make a mask to block the highlights while you work on the shadows
(or vice versa). See: http://www.astropix.com/HTML/J_DIGIT/LAYMASK.HTM
Or you can try the shadow and highlight filter in Photoshop CS. It
essentially creates the mask automatically (you don't even see it), and you
can lighten the shadow detail while holding highlight detail.
