 Hey Bobby...

Malin used either Kodak's 103a or 103b B&W silver-salt emulsions, applied to optical glass plate, for his large aperture 'masterpieces'. These plates were 8" X 10" and sometimes larger... bathed in liquid nitrogen during the exposures.

The glass plate remained flat during the exposures, and the liquid nitrogen served to 'hyper' them. These shots were also done in the 'prime focus cage' of the 1+ meter instrument, where the secondary mirror would normally go... this yielded about f1.3, if memory serves... his longest exposures were about 8 - 12 minutes, for the blue filtered data.

This is about all I dare from memory... and may be off a little in detail... if you surf about the AAO web-site, you should find exact details.

BTW, Jason... *fantastic* :::film::. image !!!

 Best... :o)
