Brian,
If you find that you are consistently having to print on higher contrast
paper (3 to 5) you might want to try increasing your development time. I
have tested the Ilford Multigrade filters and even though they are graduated
in 1/2 step increments of contrast, in my case they didn't increase contrast
by the amount shown on the filters. IIRC they went from
2 to 3 then 4 1/2 to 5. Results will vary depending on your light source.
The best method it to try and develop your negatives so that they print on
grade 2. More time equals gives more contrast on the negative, less time
gives less contrast on the negative.
