Well, I got a reply from Alan Holmes this afternoon. After my
description of problems, all he had to say was that "from what you've
said, no red flags are going up". He went on to say that maybe it was
gear to worm slop or words to that effect.
I reiterated the brightness problems that cannot be mount, or Gemini
related and asked if there might be something else causing the problem.
I was able to get for awhile (hole in the clouds) and determined that
it is not a focus problem. The Taurus is still tight as a drum with all
ports exactly parfocal.
I powered up the ST-4 and let it idle for an hour while I touched up
the Gemini's pointing model. I checked again for frost thinking it
might show with this evening's cooler temps. Not a sign.
So, it seems Jim J. and I are in the same sinking boat. Jim, maybe
you'd better have SBIG check out that rectum thingy.
