RE: [APML] How to clean a smudged negative?
Can't find any formulas except that the references indicate that the
commercial ones no longer used carbon tetrachloride (nasty for health &
ozone layer, ...).
I'll bet that old fashioned cigarette lighter fluid (mostly hexane) would
work, but test it on some scrap film first, assuming you can't find some
proper stuff.

DON'T use anything with water!
If the smudge is on the shiny side of the film you can probably clean it
with one of the micro-fine fabrics.
If the marks are on the emulsion side, Kodak makes (used to make?) a film
cleaner for darkroom use, but the 2 oz bottle, or whatever it was, will
probably last you for years. I'll dig thru some of my old darkroom
chemistry books and see if I have a formula.

Subject: [APML] How to clean a smudged negative?
Hey All,
My camera store isn't open yet so I thought I'd see if I can get a
quick reply here before they open at noon Pacific time. I have a
negative that I really want to get scanned because it is a good looking
shot of M33. Actually it it scanned, but the smudges are quite visible.
I hav eto assume that it happened while I was having enlargements mahe
during the last week. I keep my hands washed and take careful steps to
keep my fingers off the important parts of negatives.
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to clean it up? It won't brush
away and I have to assume it is a greasy fingerprint, a good sized part
of which is right over the core of M33. The rest is in a corner of the
negative. I have no specialized cleaner here other than a mixture of
water, a little dish soap and alcohol (?) for cleaning corrector plates
and such.
Thanks for any help,
Alan
