Hi Stuart,
Most of these images have severly clipped histograms on the shadow end. It
could be happening in the scan or in the subsequent processing in
Photoshop. If it happened in the scan, you would need to re-scan them so
that they are not clipped.
Do the scan and then, without doing anything else, open the image in
Photoshop and look at the histograms. Then you can see if the data was
clipped in the scan.
Laptops are extremely difficult to use for image processing. You should be
using a CRT.
