Re: [APML] Astro Imaging mount capacity
Sergio,
One important factor when approaching the rated weight capacity of a
mount is how the weight is distributed. I would not hesitate to put a 10" or
11" SCT on a G11, as they are very compact. I do not believe that it will
carry my metal 8" f6 Newtonian effectively. I use it instead on a modified
Meade DS16 mount which has 1.5" steel shafts instead of Losmandy's 1". I do
however use an 8" f9 cassegrain on my G11 and it works just fine. The
difference is the length of the optical tube. I also shoot from the prairies
of Western Canada, where there is almost always a wind - also an important
consideration. A 10" Newtonian presents a lot of surface area to the wind
and will present a long moment arm....
If you are not in an observatory, then you might want to look at the
next size up such as a used Byers 812, Losmandy Titan or Astro-Physics 900.
What may be cheaper is a smaller photographic scope! If the scope isn't
rigid enough, you won't get good results and my gut feeling is that a 10"
Newtonian is just a bit too much for a G-11.

My system is a 10" reflector,an 80mm guidescope and an OM1 camera. The mount
that I have in mind is the Losmandy G-11.
