[APML] Slightly OT: Finding Uranus with Binocs
I know we're supposed to talk about film photography but I was just out
with my 16 year old son showing him how to find the planet Uranus with
binocs. It is so easy and almost nobody can say they've seen it
(percentage much higher in the astro crowd of course). Anyway, in case
for some reason someone doesn't have a planetarium program yet, find
Mars in 10x50 or 7x50 binocs, put it at the bottom centre of the fov and
there will be a nice equilateral triangle right above it in the fov (the
7 or so brightest stars making the triangle). The right hand side, first
star down from the apex star, is Uranus. He was amazed and actually so
was I.
Ah well, Sunday night and despite being crystal clear, 5am comes too
early to be out all hours. Had a good night last night though. Some
consolation.
