Re: [APML] recommendations for development of tech pan
Richard,
I think the correct answer here is "it depends". I shoot it at two
extremes - f1.5 and f9. For f9 the choice is easy, D19 for 6 to 10 minutes @
68F. At this slow speed, every little bit helps. With the Schmidt camera,
it's a bit different. I have been meaning to try HC110 but haven't yet. I
use a shorter D19 time (4-5 minutes) and deep exposures. I like to get as
much faint nebulosity as I can possibly get, but this sometimes produces a
problem with D19. If there is a bright nebula in the field, it becomes so
black that a scanner can't pull any detail from it. I also switched to water
stop bath when using D19, due to pinholes in the emulsion. With the "mild"
HC110, I would probably go back to acid stop bath as well. The trick is to
get out there and shoot some film, keep notes of what you do. Eventually you
get a feel for what works best for the type of object, the sky conditions,
focal ratio etc. After 600+ tech pan images, on some days I still get it
wrong!
