Re: [APML] OT: Anti Virus Software

Michael,
Many virus programs these days search infected machines for email
addresses. These can come from the address book, mail in the inbox or
Internet Explorer cache. These addresses are selected at random and popped
into the "from" field and sent out using it's own built-in mail server. One
reason that the Sobig.F was so devastating is that unlike previous versions,
this mail server worked with several emails concurrently instead of sending
out sequentially. All you can tell is that someone who either has received
email from you, has you in their address book or has visited your web site
is sending out pox infected emails with your name on them.
Unfortunately some corporate autoresponders haven't figured this out and
bounce pox ridden emails back to the sender - who they didn't come from.
This generates even more traffic and the net soon becomes bogged down and
people get needlessly excited. In 4 more days this version of Sobig shuts
down anyway. But, version G is no doubt coming to a computer near you
soon.......

Hello Jim and others in APML:

At least you got an answer from Norton's. I emailed them for help and never
got an answer. One thing that bothers me is that I keep on getting emails
related to the SOBIG.F worm as well as emails from others saying that I have
sent them emails with SOBIG.F infection. I used the Symantec Fix Tool for
SOBIG.F several times and it has NEVER detected SOBIG.F on my computer. Can
someone explain why I am getting and sending infected SOBIG.F emails if the
worm is not in my computer (according to Symantec/Norton's)?
